Early Numeracy at Work

Early Numeracy at work! The math just shows up, when you look for it, in small moments. My nephew gets major credit for being the only one of the cousins willing to help me set the table for pizza night last week. Spoons for pizza is what all the cool kids are doing these days (now you know). I was lucky enough to catch these math moves on video as he worked out what we needed for a party of 8, and I’ve watched it numerous times now to pull the brilliance out to share with you all. There’s a lot going on here, if you know what you’re looking for!

This small mathematician is 4 years old. What skills are we watching here?

  1. Verbal number word sequence. My nephew can count from 1 (he is automatic to 8, clearly, and can go further depending on the context). But within 8 he can….
  2. Tag items with one-to-one correspondence (watch him point at each fork).
  3. Self-monitor (metacognition), so he pauses when things seem whoppsed-up (watch him stop himself when he reversed the order of the fork and spoon and things seemed off).
  4. Persist and problem solve until things make sense (watch him finally catch the fork/spoon flip flop and account for it as he goes).
  5. Match each fork/spoon setting to a person in our dinner group (one-to-one mapping).
  6. Realize that he was unable to reach his goal of 8, and compensate by knowing exactly how many more place settings he had to pull from the drawer (missing addends and compensation/part whole thinking).
  7. And then conserve the value of his count by adding a place setting and not needing to recount from one to confirm he had enough (conservation of number and counting on).

None of this is simple. Most of the time, as adults, we take it for granted, acting as if coordinating all of this moment to moment is no big deal. But we’ve had decades to build these synapses. They fire imperceptibly for us now, yet producing a set like this takes real cognitive effort and is a huge marker of early numeracy: coordinating spatial awareness, physical manipulation, sequence tracking, and abstract reasoning. This kid is awesome, and not just because he’s my most helpful nephew.
